JAZZ SPRING 2013 WOMAN ON THE HORIZON – ANAT COHEN QUARTET (USA) Festival Theatre Anat Cohen Quartet: Anat Cohen – saxophone, clarinet, Jason Lindner – piano, Joe Martin – double bass, Daniel Freedman – drums The first lady to appear on the horizon of the Jazz Spring festival was born into a family of musicians in Tel Aviv. Having served as a tenor saxophonist with the Israeli Air Force band, she studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston before moving to the jazz capital of New York after her graduation in 1999. In the meantime, she immersed herself in the broadest possible range of jazz styles, from swing to post-bop to Latin music, demonstrating an equally captivating level of virtuosity and inventive richness on the soprano and tenor saxophone as on the clarinet. Her skill as a player of the latter won her the title of Clarinettist of the Year six years in a row from the Jazz Journalists Association (JJA), while she has topped numerous polls of critics and readers alike in the jazz magazine DownBeat. For many years, she toured as a member of The Diva Jazz Orchestra, an all-female big band, and also worked with Duduka Da Fonseca’s Samba Jazz Quintet, in addition to performing the music of Louis Armstrong with David Ostwald’s Gully Low Jazz Band. This musical kaleidoscope is also typical of Anat Cohen’s sixth and latest album entitled Claroscuro, on which she makes excursions to New Orleans and New York, and to Africa and Brazil, in the company of her regular quartet. She brings these same musicians and this same musical diversity to this concert at the Palace of Arts. Anat has a brother named Avishai Cohen, a jazz trumpeter not to be confused with the hugely successful double bassist and singer of the same name, while she also has another brother, Yuval, who plays the saxophone. Together as the 3 Cohens band, they are likened to the Heath, Jones or Marsalis jazz clans – illustrious company indeed!
