Taxis in Budapest have undergone a great standardisation. Now they will all have the same yellow design, and will charge the same standardised rates, no matter where or when you order them.

The new regime of taxi tariffs introduced in Budapest to replace the previous price capping system, means that from September 2013, the prices for all licensed taxi cabs are now:

HUF 450 base fee

HUF 280 per Kilometre

HUF 70 per minute waiting fee*

*when the vehicle has to wait for you, not when immobile in traffic.

This is an overall rise compared to previous prices, but the authorities are maintaining that now this new flat system is  a lot fairer, as it has replaced a plethora of different tariffs, discount cards and fixed fees (for example to the airport). Everything is now strictly by this tariff regardless of time of day even. Taxis will also be all non-smoking, equipped with air-conditioning (which has to be used in the summer) and will accept credit cards.

As part of the new standardisation, will be other regulations will gradually phase out vehicles that have substandard performance, environmental classification and boot/trunk size. The most noticeable change however, is that all cabs now have to be yellow. There is a grace period to do the respraying, but by the end of August 2014, all taxis will be yellow. This will make it easy for tourists to avoid getting into unlicensed cabs, which tend to be rip-off artists the world over - simply just use the yellow ones. People do not generally hail taxis on the street in Hungary, but rather order them by telephone, or ask their hotel or restaurant to do so.
