Stars and Celebs in Budapest

Budapest is not only a great place for a weekend break, romantic getaway or family holiday, it is also a sought-after destination for tour promoters big and small, not to mention a great location for filming. It should be no great surprise to know that some well-known names have been here, done that. Have YOU..? Latest: Gerárd Depardieu here in Budapest, but what for exactly? Hmm...

Ridley Scott and Matt Damon filming "The Martian"
The 76 year old director and producer, well known for directing some 30 movies including classics such as Blade Runner, Aliens, Thelma & Louise, Black Hawk Down and Prometheus, is here for yet another Sci -Fi movie. Filming in Jordan and at an airfield in Budapest, Scott is directing and producing "The Martian" based on the Andy Weir novel. It stars 43 year old Matt Damon as a botanist and engineer accidentally stranded for years on the planet Mars. Reports have been coming in of Mr Scott appearing in the 8th district, so keep your eyes peeled.

Gerard Depardieu booked for
Budapest, 1st-2nd August April 2014

The larger-than-life French actor has two connections to Budapest at the moment. Firstly he is slated to play Napoleon (bit tall for that role, no?) in an outdoor performance of the Hungarian Opera Háry János on  August 1st-2nd.  Secondly, this actor is also a keen viniculturalist and plans to open a wine bar here in downtown Budapest. He already has two restaurants, one in Canada and two in Paris and he is certainly said to know his wine, so we look forward to that!

Best known for her role as Garbriella Solis in HBO's 8-series, award winning comedy drama "Desperate Housewives", Eva was here in Budapest as part of an advertising campaign - she will be the face for a particular pharmaceutical product produced here we believe. Brad Pitt
Budapest Oct 2011

Brad filmed parts of "World War Z" here. After a problem at a filming location in Russia, lots of  the great final street battle with the zombies was switched to Hungary. Interestingly enough, a minor scandal ensued as the film company flew in trunkloads of weapons in a plrivate plane, to use in the mock-battle. To add to the dodginess, the weapons were apparently completely live and not deactivated, so  they were then seized in a movie-worthy raid by the Hungarian anti-terror forces. After all that, the film changed its artisitc direction during editing and as much as 12 minutes of moslty Budapest battle scenes were cut out, so we never got to enjoy that part!
