Easter in Hungary 2013

Easter is a real get-together holiday in Hungary, when villages and families gather to be in for the traditions. Hungary is mainly a Christian country, so Easter is a traditional folk event from the beginnings. Every town and village have their own Easter Celebration, what is usually about folk concerts, painting eggs, sprinkling young women, making traditional dishes, especially based on the Easter ham. Egg-painting and decoration has great traditions too, there are many methods from folk motifs painting to carving. In some regions egg-painting developed into an art form of its own. Look for the amazing hand-painted eggs at handicraft vendors on folk festivals.

Kids usually love everything what's colourful and noisy, like Easter. Every event has a place for children to play, but the real fun is the great search for painted Easter eggs in the gardens, hidden by the Easter Bunny (parents).

Easter's Monday is a public holiday, this year it's the 1st of April. People won't work, but get up early, visit their female friends and relatives to sprinkle them with a little water or perfume, and get some painted eggs or cookies in return. This is important in favour of girls to not wither.

In countryside villages sprinkling is a lot more scenic attraction. Locals put on their traditional glad rags, and men use large buckets of water to sprinkle the young girls, so they will stay fresh, beautiful and fertile. A lot of laugh and joy accompany the whole happening, you can imagine.

There is pretty much the same program in every village. Towns expect more visitors, so there're more festival-like events.
