Budapest Spar Half Marathon
The course takes runners along Andrássy Avenue (past the Opera House), then right down to the banks of the Danube, where you get a great view across the river to where the Buda Castle dominates the skyline. Then they cross the Széchenyi Chain Bridge enjoying glances back at one of the world's most beautiful Parliament buildings.
The original Half Marathon took place in 1984 and over the last 29 years, it has grown into a major event for Budapest. In 2013 there were 13 000 runners, including 8500 individual 21 km runners and a staggering 1330 relay teams. The event has also developed into a real international event, with 1600 international participants from 65 countries. This amount of runners has necessitated a staggered starting system where runners start in 3 different groups after each other, with the last runner in a zone leaving the start zone 13 minutes after the first one. The race will get going at 9:30 in the morning and will comprise the now-familiar mix of fun-runners, relay teams and hard-core 21km marathoners. Price for participation is 45€.
As if you needed more inspiration to come and join the fun in Hungary, Budapest is actually the only capital city in the world rich in healing thermal waters. Thanks to the unique geological features of the country, Budapest is literally sitting on a huge thermal hotspot, which vents in the form of more than over 100 thermal springs which feed the city's famous bathhouses. You will see that nothing compares to the feeling of soaking in a warm and healing bath after your long run. Come and experience it after the 29th Wizz Air Budapest Half Marathon!
